As a metropolitan province (büyükşehir), İstanbul has one district municipality (ilçe belediyesi) in each of its 39 districts, and every neighbourhood belongs to the municipality of its own district. Şile has the most units (62, 6% of all units in the province), and Adalar has the fewest (5 units).

How many neighbourhoods and villages does İstanbul have in this dataset?

The İstanbul layer contains 972 units in 39 districts. All 951 classified units are neighbourhoods (mahalle); İstanbul has no villages (köy) in this layer, and 21 units are unclassified. Since 2014, under Law No. 6360, the former villages of metropolitan provinces (büyükşehir) such as İstanbul have been neighbourhoods (mahalle).

Is each neighbourhood linked to its belediye?

Yes, all 951 neighbourhoods in İstanbul carry the ID and name of their municipality (belediye).

Boundary polygons of the 972 neighbourhoods and villages of İstanbul province, Türkiye, in 39 districts: 951 mahalle and 21 unclassified. Şile is the district with the most units (62), and the polygons cover 94% of the province area. Each unit has a stable Geolocet ID, its official name and code, its district and province, and neighbourhoods are linked to one of 39 municipalities (belediye). Typical uses are GIS mapping, geocoding, spatial joins and market and logistics analysis.
